The pseudonym, adopted from the name of one of the Isles of Scilly, of (Annie) Winifred Ellerman (1894–1983), novelist, poet, and patron of the arts. The daughter of a wealthy shipping magnate, she lived for many years at Geneva; her friends in the literary world included the Sitwells and, notably, H. Doolittle, whom she met in 1918, and whom she both protected and dominated for years.
