Western designation for the smallest Russian rockets, used to launch small satellites. An example of this two-stage rocket is the Cosmos B-1, first launched in 1962, which was based on a Soviet intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM), the SS-5 Sandal. The present Cosmos version was developed from another IRBM, the SS-5 Skean.
