In Gilbertese mythology, son of a woman magically impregnated by the sun. Bue travelled to the east by canoe, seeking his father and his inheritance of cleverness, te rabakau, and knowledge, te ataibai. Like the Polynesian hero Maui, the determined Bue assaulted the sun god and obtained his desire. Although the father tried to hamper the later exploits of the son, Bue was the cultural founder hero. He taught men how to build canoes and houses, how to raise winds by magic, how to ensure health and prosperity, and how to compose dance chants.
