French Jesuit whose aim was to show how experience requires interpretation in terms of an external world, thereby countering the sceptical tendencies inherent in the philosophies of Descartes and Locke. He is often classed as a kind of precursor of Thomas Reid and the common-sense school. His various treatises and essays are collected as Oeuvres philosophiques (1843).
