In the 1880s his modernized editions of lesser-known Elizabethan authors included both dramatists and poets. He published in partnership with H. W. Lawrence from 1891 and under the imprint of the Shakespeare Head Press from 1904, acquiring a name for the quality of his books, their scholarly value, and his sympathetic treatment of authors such as Gissing and Yeats.
