Winged creature, usually depicted as a horse, which Muhammad mounted and rode to Jerusalem, through seven heavens, hell, and paradise, into the presence of God, and back to earth, according to the story of his Night Journey. Legends state that other prophets before Muhammad also rode Buraq. Used prominently in West African folk art as a symbol of Muhammad's mystical powers.
