The amount of ill health from a given cause (disease, injury, cause of disease, or risk factor) in a population of interest. It is usually expressed as lost healthy years (or months). The World Health Organization conducted a major study of the global burden of disease that led to important publications (http://www.who.int/healthinfo/bodproject/en/index.html). See also disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and health gap indicators (measures).
