Russian dancer, choreographer, academic, and director. He studied at the Moscow Ballet School, graduating in 1986 into the Russian Ballet Company. Between 1993 and 1996, and in 2003, he additionally studied at the choreographic faculty of the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts, working as teacher and repetiteur until 2009 when he succeeded Ratmansky as artistic director of the Bolshoi.

He has worked extensively on reconstructions of historic repertory, including works by Fokine (including dances from the opera Ruslan and Ludmila), Gorsky (The Humpbacked Horse and dances from Samson et Dalila), Petipa (Harlequinade, Halte de Cavalerie, Naiade et le Pecheur, The Humpbacked Horse, Esmeralda), and the Legat brothers (The Fairy Doll). He collaborated with Ratmansky on Le Corsaire (2007) for the Bolshoi and for the same company also staged Paquita Grand Pas (2008).

He is author of several books, including the Ballet Repertoire of the 18th–20th Centuries (2007).
