A tool with a hard, smooth, rounded end or surface, used for smoothing and polishing. Its various applications include gilding, in which the gold surface is polished, and metal-plate printmaking techniques, in which any unwanted roughness on the printing plate is removed before inking and printing. A burnisher is particularly crucial to the mezzotint process in which the final design is scraped from the roughened plate with a variety of burnishers.
