Pioneering French Orientalist who worked on Zoroastrian and Buddhist material, and produced a three volume edition of the Bhāgavata Purāṇa in Sanskrit and French (1840–47), the first translation of this work into a European language. He held the chair in Sanskrit at the Collége de France, where he numbered Rudolph Roth and Max Müller among his students.
