Quick Reference

A grant or financial award offered by an institution such as a university or private school to help students pay their tuition fees or other expenses related to their course of study. A limited number of bursaries are available at any one institution in any one year, and students must make an application stating their case if they wish to be considered. University bursaries are usually offered to support studies in specific subject areas, or for specific awards, such as a master's degree. Trainee teachers on school‐focused Postgraduate Certificate of Education initial teacher training programmes are entitled to bursaries as a right.

In Scotland eligibility for bursaries may be assessed on individual students' circumstances or may be awarded on successful achievement of an academic standard, and can be available to assist with travel and living expenses, or other costs incurred through study. They are available through individual institutions or through the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS).
