George Butler was born in Harrow on 11 June 1819 and died in London on 14 March 1890. Butler's father, also named George, was headmaster of Harrow; Butler attended the school from April 1831. In the autumn of 1838 he spent the first of four terms at Trinity College, Cambridge before going up to Exeter College, Oxford in 1840, where, in the following year, he won the Hertford Scholarship, was elected Petrean Fellow in 1842 and gained a first in classics in 1843.
