(1838–1910), soldier and author. Born at Suirville in Co. Tipperary, he was educated in Tullaby, Co. Offaly, before joining an infantry regiment in 1858. Besides biographies of General Gordon (1889) and Sir Charles Napier (1890), he issued accounts of his Canadian adventures in The Great Lone Land (1872) and The Wild North Land (1873). Red Cloud (1882) is a novel about the Sioux Indians.
