(1759–1821) Revolutionary War soldier and congressman, born in Prince William County, Virginia. Butler joined the South Carolina militia in 1775 at age fifteen. He fought, under several commanders, at Great Canebrake on Reedy Creek (December 1775), at Stono (June 1779), the siege of Savannah, Georgia (1779), and the siege of Augusta, Georgia (1780). During the War of 1812, he was a major general of the South Carolina militia.
