Quick Reference

Much of Butter's early publishing was ephemeral, but his high points included the first quarto of King Lear (1608). One of the earliest English publishers of periodical news, he used a newsbook form adapted from Dutch corantos. The news he published made for a turbulent career (including gaol); he and his partner, Nicholas Bourne, were satirized by Jonson in his Staple of News (first performed 1626).
