(1695–1768). Probably the best known of colonial Mexican painters. Cabrera was born in the city of Oaxaca. according to his 1768 will, and has been identified as the Miguel of a 1695 Oaxaca baptismal record, “son of unknown parents,” whose godparents were Gregorio Cabrera and Juana Reyna, both mulattos. In an earlier will of 1760 and in his 1739 marriage banns, the painter's full name is given as Miguel Mateo Maldonado y Cabrera.
