(1865–1939) A well-known physician and educator, Richard Clarke Cabot initiated the first medical social work department in the United States at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1905. Born in Brookline, Massachusetts, Cabot graduated from Harvard University (1889) and Harvard Medical School (1892). His association with Harvard continued as a member of the medical school faculty from 1899 to 1933 and as a professor of social ethics from 1920 to 1934. He began as a physician at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1898 and became chief of staff in 1912.
