Internationally known as a Nobel Peace prizewinner, he was a professor at Bryn Mawr and Harvard in New Testament studies. He was influential in questioning the traditional view that Luke was the author of the Acts. He introduced the new discipline of Form Criticism to the American public very much as R. H. Lightfoot of Oxford did in Britain.
