[J. Caffey (1895–1978), American paediatrician] A cortical bone overgrowth, particularly affecting the clavicles and mandible. It is self-limiting and usually appears before six months of age and disappears in childhood. It is characterized by fever and soft tissue swellings and is of unknown aetiology.
