Caine was born on 27 June 1902, the son of Harry Edward Caine, a railway worker. He died on 2 January 1991 and was survived by his third wife and his son from his first marriage, Sir Michael Caine. He was educated at Harrow County School and then studied at the London School of Economics and Political Science from 1919–22. He graduated with first-class honours in the BSc (Econ.), having specialized in economic history. In 1925 he married a fellow student, Muriel Harris, whom he met at one of the LSE’s popular and well attended lunch-hour dances. She died in 1962 and in 1965 he married Doris Folkand and, following her death in 1973, Lady Elizabeth Bowyer.
