A sacred spot or memorial, often on the outskirts of a village, usually identified by a tree, a grove, or a tumulus (sometimes containing the ashes of a local chief), and thought to be the haunt of various supernatural beings, such as yakṣas and nāgas. Buddhist stūpas are, in part, a development and expansion of the caitya cult.
