Calabrese is a variety of green broccoli whose year-round import from warmer areas of Europe has in recent decades put the home-grown purple-sprouting broccoli into the commercial shade. It was originally developed in Calabria, in southwestern Italy (the word means literally ‘Calabrian’ in Italian), and seems first to have reached British shores at the end of the 1920s.
