calcite-gritted ware

Quick Reference

Pottery whose fabric embodies crushed calcite (either shell or mineral grit) as a tempering agent, used especially for kitchen wares such as storage jars, cooking pots, and bowls. Where acidic soil conditions have dissolved the calcite grits (or other calcareous material), voids are visible in the hand specimen and the fabric is often referred to as vesicular ware.
