President of Mexico, 2006–  Born in Morelia, he graduated with a BA in law and an MA in economics before obtaining a masters in public administration at Harvard. He joined the National Action Party (Partido Acción Nacional, PAN) and became its youth leader in 1986, and its president in 1996. He narrowly won the 2006 election, which was contested by his left‐wing populist opponent, Andrés Manuel López Obrador. In office, he stepped up a campaign against drugs trafficking, vowing to destroy the gangs whose attacks cost the lives of more than 2,000 people in 2005.
