Members of the S100 calcium-binding protein family. Calgranulin-A (S100-A8, 93 aa) is expressed by macrophages in chronic inflammation and is also expressed in epithelial cells constitutively or induced during dermatoses. May interact with intermediate filaments in monocytes and epithelial cells. Calgranulin-B (S100-A9, migration inhibitory factor-related protein 14, 114 aa) is expressed in inflammation and may inhibit protein kinases. Calgranulin-C (S100-A12, 92 aa) is proteolytically cleaved to calcitermin, which possesses antifungal and some antibacterial activity.
