Quick Reference

A term—les sports californiens—used by French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu to refer to individualized and usually outdoor sports (that have also been called ‘*whiz sports’ by Nancy Midol in France), many of which emanated from the west coast of the USA. Bourdieu contrasted these Californian sports—trekking by foot, pony, cycle, motor-bike, or boat; canoeing; archery; windsurfing; cross-country skiing; sailing; hang gliding; microlights—with what he called ‘classical sports’ that represent an ‘organized, signposted, cultivated nature’.
