Quick Reference

A mid‐5th‐cent. treaty between Athens and Persia. Its historicity is disputed, chiefly because Thucydides (2) does not mention it explicitly, though some passages in his History are probably indirect evidence. The date of the Peace is disputed; some evidence points to 449 but other items suggest the 460s, and this may mean that the 449 agreement was a renewal. Certainly direct Athenian–Persian hostilities ceased in mid‐century.
