A breakaway group from the Muslim Youth Movement of South Africa (MYMSA). Formed in 1984 and led by Farid Esack and Ebrahim Rasool. Divisions took place when a small group advocated that MYMSA affiliate with the United Democratic Front (UDF), the internal wing of the then exiled African National Congress. COI articulated an Islamic message against racial discrimination (apartheid) that was in line with the strategies and vision of the UDF. In postapartheid South Africa the organization is effectively in decline.
