Battle that took place in 656 between followers of Caliph Ali ibn Abi Talib and Meccan aristocrats led by Muhammad's wife, Aishah, protesting Ali's failure to capture and punish the murderers of his predecessor, Uthman. Named for the camel on which Aishah sat. First battle in which the caliph led troops against other Muslims.
