A traditional sport in countries of the Gulf States, such as Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates, and some north African states such as Mauritania, where the modern form of the activity has been promoted as a traditional cultural practice. More commercialized versions of the sport have been based on betting and gambling, and mired in controversies relating to alleged child labour (the use of children as lighter jockeys).
