1. Any equipment used to photographically record images. The name for a number of devices that use lenses and apertures to photograph either a single still image or a series of still images captured in rapid succession (a movie). These images can be recorded either chemically, by being preserved in a light-sensitive coating applied to film, or as electrical voltages stored on magnetic tape, encoded in either digital or analogue form. 2. (camera operator) A non-sexist variation on cameraman, the production credit given to the person who operates the camera in the film and television industries.
