Scottish theologian. In 1831 he was found guilty of heresy by the General Assembly and deprived of his cure. He maintained a successful ministry to an independent congregation in Glasgow from 1833 to 1859. The thesis of his main work was that the spiritual context of the sufferings of Christ, rather than their penal character, made atonement for sin.
