A safe, simple, self-administered fitness test, the purpose of which is motivational, rather than to define fitness levels accurately. The subject completes a questionnaire prior to the test to ensure basic fitness. Then, after warming-up, the subject climbs two steps of a standard staircase (each step is 8 inches or 20.3 cm high) at a rhythm set according to the age and sex of the subject for one or two periods of 3 min. The stepping rate approximates to 70% maximum aerobic capacity. A fitness score is obtained from the duration of the exercise and heart rate.
