Quick Reference

A variant of the sport polo, in which contestants are in specially designed canoes. The sport is one of eight forms of canoeing recognized by the British Canoeing Union, which says: ‘Polo combines paddling and ball handling skills with an exciting contact team game, where tactics and positional play are as important as the speed and fitness of the individual athletes.’ The ball can be thrown by hand or flicked by the paddle, and the aim is to score goals in the opponent's net, suspended two metres above the water. In 2009, British men were the world champions, though the sport was not established on an extensive worldwide basis.
