Overview

Canon of the Mass

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

The consecratory prayer of the Mass used practically throughout the RC Church until 1968. A nearly related form is quoted by St Ambrose (d. 397), and by the time of Pope Gregory I (590–604) it was virtually fixed.

Originally opening with the Preface, which came to be regarded as an introduction to the Canon rather than as part of it, it is composed of a series of short prayers, including the Words of Institution. In a slightly revised form, it is the first of the Eucharistic Prayers in the 1970 Roman Missal.

Subjects: Christianity.
