The emperor who founded the Mauryan dynasty, establishing his capital at Pāṭaliputra (modern Patnā), and eventually conquering and ruling over much of northern India and Afghanistan. He was the grandfather of Aśoka; his chief minister is said to have been Kauṭilya.
