According to myth, one of the two great dynasties of ancient India, the counterpart to the Sūryavaṃśa or ‘Solar Dynasty’. Traditionally founded by the moon (King Soma), it was divided into Yādava and Paurava branches, derived from Yayāti's two sons, Yadu and Puru. In the Mahābhārata, the Ādiparvan of which recounts the Lunar Dynasty's early history, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma belong to the former branch, the warring Pāṇḍava and Kaurava cousins to the latter.
