A region synonymous with R. Good's (The Geography of the Flowering Plants, 1974) S. African kingdom, and in relation to its size one that has perhaps the most remarkable and richest flora in the world. There are about 2500 species, and an unusually high proportion of the genera are endemic (see endemism). Many well-known garden plants and greenhouse succulents originated in this floral region.
