In all navies the commissioned rank next below that of rear admiral (but see commodore); also by custom the title of the commanding officer of any naval ship irrespective of his commissioned rank. In the merchant marine, it is the master of a merchant ship. By extension, captain is also the title of the senior rating in charge of a group of seamen engaged in particular duties, e.g. captain of the hold, captain of the maintop, etc. French, capitaine de vaisseau; German, Kapitän-zur-See.
