(b Syracuse, NY, 1956)

US dancer. She studied in Syracuse with Augustine and Boughton, gained a BA in Fine Arts at the State University of New York, and later studied at the Jacob's Pillow School in Massachusetts, and with Maggie Black in New York winning a scholarship to the Martha Graham School. After dancing with Kazuko Hirabayashi Dance Theater and Marcus Skulkind Dance Company she joined the Martha Graham company in 1979 where she remained until 2004 as its leading dancer and eventually its co-director. With her intense, heroically scaled stage presence Capucilli was the natural inheritor of Graham's own roles, taking over 25 of them as well as creating new roles in The Rite of Spring (The Chosen One, 1984), Temptations of the Moon (1986), and Maple Leaf Rag (Woman, 1990), and in the reconstructions of Salem Shore (1992) and Sketches from Chronicle (1994). The 1937 solo Deep Song was reconstructed for her in 1988 and in 1993 Tharp choreographed a lead role for her in Demeter and Persephone (created for the Graham company). After Graham's death Capucilli became actively involved in the research and reconstruction of the choreographer's early works, however after the company's reorganization in 2004 she left and became a performer with the Buglisi Dance Company.
