This play, which Shirley and his contemporaries thought his best work, describes the intrigues of the diabolical Cardinal in his efforts to marry the Duchess Rosaura, a young widow, to his nephew Columbo, despite her love for Alvarez. All ends badly with assassinations, attempted rape, and poisonings.
