Cuban dancer. He trained, from the age of 10, at the Provincial School of Ballet and the Cuban National Ballet School before graduating into the Cuban National Ballet. After winning competitions in America he moved to Britain, performing as principal dancer with English National Ballet (from 1990) and the Royal Ballet (from 1993). In 1995 he joined American Ballet Theatre where his technical virtuosity, classical style and exemplary partnering skills have been showcased in all of ABT's 19th-century repertory. He additionally dances in contemporary works including ballets by Robbins, Balanchine, Kylián, Tharp, and has created roles in several works including Within You Without You (chor. David Parsons, Ann Reinking, Natalie Weir, and Stanton Welch, 2002).
