Spanish tenor.

Born in Barcelona, he made his opera debut in 1970 as Gennaro in Lucrezia Borgia after studying under J. F. Puig at the Barcelona Conservatory. Subsequently he was coached by Montserrat Caballé (1933– ). He appeared in London in 1971 in Donizetti's Maria Stuarda and made his US debut the following year as Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly; he has since been rapturously received at Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera House, the Lyric Opera in Chicago, and elsewhere. He performed in front of a worldwide television audience in 1990 when he sang at a concert in Rome with Domingo and Pavarotti as part of the celebrations for football's World Cup.
