The breaking, or parting, of objects on board ship, particularly applicable in the case of masts and yards. It is an expression used also in the case of ropes and hawsers when they break as a result of sudden violence, such as a particularly heavy gust of wind or a ship with too much way on it when attempting to secure alongside.
