Quick Reference

Algerian-born Danish publisher, entrepreneur, and founder of the Tivoli Gardens (1842–3) and the Casino (1845–7—the first commercial theatre in the Danish capital), both in Copenhagen. On both these projects he worked with the architect Harald Conrad Stilling, although the unique Chinoiserie fantasy, the Tivoli Pantomime Theatre, was designed by Jens Vilhelm Dahlerup and Ove Petersen.

Carstensen resided in NYC, USA, from 1852 to 1855, where he designed the polychrome Crystal Palace (1853–4—burnt down 1858) with the German architect Karl (or Charles) Gildemeister (1820–69).
