poet, born in Georgetown and educated at Queen's College, Guyana. In 1975 he spent a year at Essex University as poet in residence. With his stirring and influential volume about political oppression, Poems of Resistance (1954), he established an international reputation. Other volumes include Jail Me Quickly (1964), Poems of Succession (1977), and Poems of Affinity (1980).
