Oregon-born author, on the faculty of Syracuse University, is best known for his short stories, often treating the bleak lives of blue-collar people, published in Will You Please Be Quiet, Please (1976), What We Talk About When We Talk About Love (1981), and Cathedral (1983). Poems are collected in Winter Insomnia (1970) and At Night the Salmon Move (1976). Fires (1984) is a selection of poems, stories, and essays.
