caries test

Quick Reference

A means of assessing the susceptibility of an individual to caries. The test is based on studies showing that groups of individuals with high Lactobacillus counts often had, or developed, more caries than groups with low counts. Lactobacillus counts as a caries predictor have shown variable results in individual cases and therefore, as a single test to screen for caries risk, it is of limited value; however, the test has been used to identify at-risk groups. The test may be undertaken at the chairside or in the laboratory.

Subjects: Dentistry.
