Hit international musical based on the poems of T. S. Eliot (Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats) with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, choreography by Gillian Lynne, and direction by Trevor Nunn. It opened in 1981 at the New London Theatre in London's West End and transferred to Broadway the following year, opening at the Winter Garden Theater on 7 Oct. 1982. On 19 June 1997 it became the longest-running show in Broadway history, and it was also the longest-running musical in London's West End, where it ran for 21 years.
