A group of cationic antimicrobial peptides mostly found in the secretory (azurophil) granules of neutrophils, although may be found elsewhere. The antimicrobial activity is in a structurally varied C-terminal cationic region that is joined to a conserved cathelin-like propiece from which it is proteolytically released. Examples are LL-37/hCAP18, CAP-18, SMAP-29, BMAP-27, and BMAP-28, the protegrin PG-1, and indolicidin (13 aa).
